What to Look for in a UK Placement Agent

Choosing the right UK placement agent is a critical decision. LGBR Capital sets out the key criteria — from regulatory standing and investor relationships to operational capability and alignment.

Selecting the right placement agent is one of the most consequential decisions an asset manager will make in their distribution journey. The quality of the relationship, and the capabilities behind it, will determine not just the quantum of capital raised, but the quality of the investors introduced and the long-term sustainability of those relationships.

This article sets out the key criteria that asset managers should apply when evaluating a UK placement agent.

Regulatory standing and conduct record

Any UK placement agent must hold FCA authorisation. Managers should verify the scope of that authorisation, confirm that it covers the specific activities required (including any regulated financial promotion), and review the firm’s regulatory history. A clean regulatory record is a baseline requirement, not a differentiator, but it should always be verified.

Data and market intelligence

A placement agent who can demonstrate genuine data capability, including proprietary intelligence on investor allocation trends, market positioning, and competitive dynamics, brings a meaningful edge to the distribution process. This is particularly important in the current environment, where capital raising for asset managers is increasingly competitive and the cost of unfocused distribution activity is high.

The quality of investor relationships

It is crucial that a placement agent has strong relationships within their investor database. The question is not how many investors a firm claims to know, but how well they know them, how actively they engage with them, and whether those investors are genuinely relevant to the fund in question.

Managers should ask for specific examples of investor introductions in comparable strategies. They should also seek to understand whether the placement agent has active relationships across the relevant channels, including wealth channel distribution, private bank distribution, family office capital raising, and advisory network channels, or whether they are strong in only one segment of the market.

Operational capability

The best placement agents bring more than relationships. They provide meaningful operational support: fund structuring capabilities, experience managing ACD relationships, and deep knowledge of the platform relationships and onboarding process that determines whether a fund is accessible to professional investors at point of sale.

Without this operational layer, the most well-connected placement agent will struggle to convert investor interest into completed transactions.

Alignment and transparency

Fee structure, scope of mandate, and reporting standards all need to be clearly agreed upfront. Managers should look for a placement agent who is transparent about what they are doing, for whom, and on what basis - and who can demonstrate that their interests are aligned with the manager’s, not just with the volume of introductions made.

‍The right UK placement agent is not the one with the largest database. It is the one with the deepest relationships, the broadest capability, and the alignment of interests to act as a genuine long-term distribution partner.
